Living in Toxic Times: Understanding Society’s Poisonous Brew
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the state of our world? You’re not alone.
We’re living in extraordinarily challenging times where many of us are struggling to make sense of the chaos around us. But what if I told you there’s a method to this madness? What if understanding the toxic soup we’re all swimming in could help you not only survive but thrive?
Today, I’m going to take you on a journey to understand what’s really happening beneath the surface of our societal upheaval. As Mia Heni wisely observed, “We are in the midst of a collective loss that is unfolding in real time… Our collective nervous system has been inflamed into a new form of survival mode.”
The key insight here? There is a solution, but we must shed survival mode to access it. As Buckminster Fuller famously said, “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
Are You Trapped in Survival Mode? Four Ingredients in Our Collective Crisis That Are Toxifying Individuals and Society
Let’s examine the four toxic ingredients creating our collective crisis:
1. Chronic Stress
According to the American Psychological Association’s 2024 Stress in America survey, over three-quarters of Americans are dealing with chronic stress. The main sources include:
– Future of the nation (77%)
– Economy (73%)
– Consequences of the 2024 US presidential election (69%)
– Housing costs (65%)
– Mass shootings (63%)
– Spread of false news (62%)
– Social divisiveness (60%)
How high are your stress levels? Which factors are affecting you most deeply?
2. Learned Helplessness
This psychological condition occurs when we feel powerless to change situations and believe nothing we do has impact. Most of us develop this belief through repeated experiences of failure or lack of control, often starting in childhood.
The learned helplessness mindset leads to giving up, even in situations where we might otherwise succeed. We end up in perpetual stuckness, unable to improve our circumstances.
What aspects of your life have been captured by learned helplessness? Around which issues do you feel most powerless?
3. The Unjust World Hypothesis
This is the opposite of what social psychologist Melvin Lerner originally called the “Just World Hypothesis” in the 1960s. While the Just World Hypothesis holds that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people, the Unjust World Hypothesis holds that the world is inherently unfair and that leaders do not serve our best interests.
This worldview fuels frustration, victimhood, anger, cynicism, disillusionment, and disengagement. It hold that outcomes are determined by factors beyond our control—luck, privilege, conspiracies, and systemic biases. This reinforces Learned Helplessness.
Which hypothesis have you bought into, and to what extent? What price are you paying for this belief?
4. Misplaced Locus of Control
Ideally, our highest self would be the boss of our wellbeing and impact. When it’s not, we face two main problems:
– External Locus of Control: Others, situations, and societal dynamics control us
– Inner Critic Locus of Control: We’re controlled by a part of us that blames and shames
Both versions trap us in survival mode, limiting us to five primitive responses: fight, flee, freeze (deer in the headlights), faint (play possum, hoping the threat will eventually pass), or fawn (give someone the false impression that we agree with them so they’ll not attack us).
Which form(s) of Misplaced Locus of Control do you use? Perhaps a number of them? How does Misplaced Locus of Control impact your beliefs, emotions, words, and actions? How does it impact the people in your work or personal life?
Three Possible Futures for Humanity
Humanity is undergoing a seismic shift that’s profoundly disorienting because most of us don’t recognize what’s actually occurring: we’re elevating into a new species in our evolutionary journey toward more complete spiritual expression — from Homo Sapiens (human animals) to something else.
Three potential futures currently have the most momentum:
1. Return to a Romanticized Past
Some seek comfort in past societal structures by attempting to return to an idealized version of history that selectively ignores the problems during those prior times. This “regressionism” is simply impossible, though many are trying to pursue it anyway.
This doesn’t mean we should abandon timeless values and ethics—rather, these should help guide the future we co-create.
2. Becoming Robotic, Ego-Based Human-Animal Cyborgs
This future—which I call “Homo Machina” (human machines)—would be ruled by overlords who believe they’re smarter than Source (whatever term you use for higher wisdom) and who commoditize us into part-biological, part cybernetic chattel who serve their needs while we imagine we’re still free.
This toxic path is potentially attainable and serves those obsessed with excessive power and wealth, as well as ideologues obsessed with forcing their worldview onto others. Many genuinely believe this version is in humanity’s best interest, even though it will create 21st-century slaves.
3. Becoming Conduits of Higher Love, Wisdom, and Power
This is the future I advocate—one where we transcend being Homo sapiens (human animals) and elevate into intuiting, thinking, feeling, and acting as higher human expressions of Source (higher love, wisdom, and power) in the physical universe. I, and a growing number of other influencers, call this new species “Homo Spiritus” (human spirits).
Which Future Will You Choose? A Deep Dive into Our Options
Which future do you want for humanity, yourself, your loved ones, and your descendants? What qualities would you most want this future to have—and not have?
To become truly capable of enabling a Homo Spiritus future, we must first free ourselves from societal and personal spells that sabotage our Locus of Control.
Breaking Free from Societal and Personal Spells That Have Hijacked Us
Five Societal Spells
1. The Happiness Spell: Defining happiness through material possessions, wealth, or other accomplishments.
2. The Health Spell: The unholy alliance between the “symptom control industry” and “illness creation industry.”
3. The Prosperity Spell: The belief that to attain financial abundance you must sacrifice your values, integrity, wellbeing, and cherished relationships OR that you must sacrifice financial abundance in order to retain those.
4. The Patriotism Spell: Misrepresenting true patriotism as our country prospering no matter what the cost to other countries, humanity’s survival, or planetary wellbeing.
5. The Problem-Solving Spell: Engaging in coercion or compromise instead of authentic collaboration
Two Personal Spells
1. Childhood Survival Plan: The lifesaving intuitive choice to sacrifice integrity, authenticity, and connection for survival. It includes five ingredients: A) A happy ending fantasy; B) Rules to follow to make it happen; C) Hiding parts of us that seem to be unacceptable, frightening, or confusing to others (“Pandora’s Box”); D) Developing a mask — a public self — that over-relies on parts of us that are okay to express combined with inventing qualities we don’t have because others seem to want them from us (“Mask,” technically known as “Persona”); and E) Numbing the pain (Anesthesia).
2. Adulthood Ego Redemption Plan: Because we must automate our childhood survival plan, but the time we enter adulthood, we’ve practiced that plan for so long that we think it’s who we are rather than how we needed to survive. On top of that, our childhood survival plan didn’t make our happy ending fantasy fully come true, so as adults we must now try to redeem ourselves (prove our worth) because we failed to make it work.
The Hero’s/Heroine’s Journey Framework for Personal and Societal Transformation
The hero’s/heroine’s journey is a time-honored, cross-cultural framework for both fiction (Homer’s Iliad, Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Lucas’s Star Wars, etc.) and personal/societal development.
It consists of six phases:
1. The Call: A call to adventure or self-development that is classically issued three times before we finally say yes.
2. The Separation: Leaving our usual life, frames of reference, and touchstones.
3. The Descent: A preparation period where we encounter guides and companions while developing basic skills to succeed with our journey.
4. The Ordeals: Triumphing over seemingly unsurvivable challenges (our unresolved traumas, our past baggage, our limiting beliefs, our distorted sense of self, and so forth).
5. The Reintegration: Emerging from our ordeals transformed in ways we must now fully understand and embrace.
6. The Embodiment: Return to our daily life with elevated purpose and unbridled passion that let us live a more elevated life. This might be in the world we left prior to our journey or we might realize we need to start anew.
This framework can be custom-crafted for various purposes, including self-development, relationship development, leader development, societal development, and government development.
Your SPARC Blueprint for Transformation
The SPARC Blueprint is a specialized version of the Hero’s/Heroine’s Journey designed to guide us toward our most elevated future, individually and collectively:
– S – Shatter Spells: Break free from societal and personal spells (see above).
– P – Picture the Future: Envision the elevated future you most want for yourself, those you love, your descendents, and humanity.
– A – Align Your Purpose: Embrace your dual-pronged purpose (your Soul Growth Mission and your Impact Mission — see further below) in helping the future you want to emerge.
– R – Rise Your Capabilities: Uplevel mindsets, skillsets, and habits to more effectively actualize your purpose.
– C – Collaborate: Select mentors and support communities, and get involved with initiatives, causes, or organizations/businesses that best enable you to amplify your impact as you actualize your purpose.
Moving from Me-Me-Me to Me-We-Us
What’s emerging now is a next evolution in human potential—moving beyond reuniting mind, body, and spirit (me, me, and me) to a higher level of integration: reuniting me, we, and us.
– Me: Authenticity, self-integrity.
– We: Connection, relationship integrity.
– Us: Impact, collective/societal integrity.
Me-We-Us as a whole, complete Homo Spiritus version of self that’s one-third authenticity, one-third connection, and one-third impact.
Discovering Your Dual Purpose
Most purpose frameworks focus solely on what I call an “impact mission”—the unique influence we feel called to have in helping to bring about the future we want. But purpose actually has two interconnected dimensions:
1. Impact Mission: The unique positive influence we feel called to have.
2. Soul Growth Mission: The elevation of our spirits around macro themes in our development that generally take a lifetime to master.
It’s important to develop both mission statements, and to harmonize them, to fully actualize your purpose.
Tools for Your Hero’s/Heroine’s Journey
The three essential ingredients in a successful Hero’s/Heroine’s Journey included in the SPARC Blueprint are:
1. A Road Map (the SPARC Blueprint itself)
2. A Guide (a mentor who helps you navigate the road map)
3. Companions (peers who effectively support one another on these journeys)
Using this approach, you can answer the call to transcend from Homo sapiens survival into Homo Spiritus thriving, by separating from your limiting preconceptions, aligning your purpose with your desired future, developing elevated capabilities for actualizing your purpose, and collaborating to amplify your impact. That’s the essence of what the SPARC Blueprint facilitates.
Taking Action in Challenging Times
No matter how dismal things might look right now, don’t let yourself be seduced into believing the sky is falling. What’s actually happening is that we’re ascending, and the current collapse is the wake-up call we’ve collectively signed up for in order to at last develop the willingness and commitment to take the journey.
We’ve ignored lower-intensity prior wake-up calls, and now we’re being asked to undertake a hero’s or heroine’s journey toward our most enlightened future. The SPARC Blueprint version of that journey can help make this evolution and transcendence possible.
The world needs you. Your nation needs you. Your loved ones need you. You need you. Be active in fulfilling your calling to help the future you most want to emerge.
Remember: We’re not just facing a crisis—we’re experiencing the birth pangs of humanity’s next evolutionary leap. How will you answer the call?
