The Science of Brainwashing
By Justin Recla
How Elon Musk and Gad Saad Manipulated the Masses Against “Woke”
In the past decade, the word woke has undergone a dramatic shift in public perception, transformed from a term signifying awareness and social consciousness to a vilified symbol of ideological warfare.
This transformation was not organic—it was engineered. A deliberate psychological operation, driven by powerful influencers like Elon Musk and supported by pseudo-intellectuals like Gad Saad, has weaponized social influence, cognitive biases, and repetitive exposure to rewire public perception.
At the heart of this mass manipulation is the science of linguistic conditioning, cognitive dissonance, and the susceptibility of human cognition to social influence. This article will break down the psychological mechanisms that enabled this large-scale brainwashing campaign and explain why many people who now reject “wokeness” are, paradoxically, under a form of deep unconscious control.
The Power of Language: You Cannot Change the Meaning of “Woke” at a Subconscious Level
Linguistic studies have long established that the words we hear, speak, and repeat reinforce neural connections in the brain.
This phenomenon, known as Hebbian learning (Hebb, 1949), dictates that “neurons that fire together, wire together.” Every time a person hears or uses a word, their brain strengthens its association with the existing meaning of that word.
This means that despite external attempts to redefine “woke,” the subconscious mind still processes it as awake and aware. Linguistically, it is impossible to erase the intrinsic definition of a word merely through social conditioning—it can only be reframed in context. However, with enough social and psychological pressure, people can be manipulated into reacting emotionally to the word rather than accessing its true meaning.
This is precisely how the anti-woke movement operates: by using negative reinforcement and repetition, it conditions people to have an adverse emotional reaction to “woke,” despite their subconscious understanding of its true meaning.
The Science of Repetition and Social Conditioning
Musk and others leveraged a well-documented psychological principle known as the illusory truth effect (Hasher, Goldstein, & Toppino, 1977). This cognitive bias causes people to believe false information simply because they have heard it repeatedly. When influential figures like Musk, Saad, and political operatives consistently labeled “woke” as a “disease” or a “threat,” they were not arguing from reason but rather exploiting this psychological vulnerability.
Social influence further reinforced this manipulation.
Research on social conformity (Asch, 1951) shows that individuals are highly susceptible to adopting the beliefs of their in-group, even when those beliefs contradict reality. By making “anti-woke” sentiment a badge of belonging within certain political and ideological groups, influencers created a system where rejecting “wokeness” became necessary for social survival.
Gad Saad’s False Science and the Weaponization of “TDS”
Gad Saad, a self-proclaimed evolutionary psychologist, has played a significant role in spreading the idea that progressive thought (i.e., “wokeness”) is a form of pathology.
His work builds on the fabricated concept of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS), a term used to dismiss legitimate criticism of authoritarianism as irrational hysteria.
However, TDS is not recognized in any scientific or psychological literature—it is a propaganda term designed to discredit dissent. By equating ideological awareness with mental illness, Saad and others laid the groundwork for the dehumanization of progressive thinkers.
The strategy was simple:
- Label critical thinking as irrational.
- Redefine “woke” as an affliction, not an awareness.
- Use repetition to condition emotional reactions.
The result? A mass psychological reframing in which people who once considered awareness a virtue now view it as a threat.
Brainwashing in Action: Social Peer Influence and the Rejection of Awareness
One of the most insidious aspects of this brainwashing campaign is its reliance on social peer influence. Humans are wired for social cohesion, and studies on ingroup-outgroup dynamics (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) show that individuals will reject information that contradicts their group’s beliefs—even when that information is demonstrably true.
This creates a psychological firewall that prevents deprogramming. Those who have been conditioned to reject “wokeness” often surround themselves with like-minded individuals, reinforcing their beliefs through echo chambers. Online, this is exacerbated by algorithmic filtering, which ensures that people are exposed only to content that aligns with their pre-existing biases (Pariser, 2011).
This is why logical arguments about the true meaning of “woke” fail. The only way to break through this conditioning is not through debate but through human connection.
Breaking the Spell: The Only Way to Reawaken the Brainwashed
Psychological research suggests that people are most likely to change their beliefs not through argument but through emotional resonance and personal relationships. Studies on contact theory (Allport, 1954) show that meaningful interaction with individuals from different perspectives can reduce prejudice and shift ideological stances.
In the context of “woke brainwashing,” this means that those trapped in the anti-woke mindset will not be “awakened” by facts but by genuine human connection. The cognitive dissonance caused by their programming is too strong to be resolved through reason alone. Instead, it requires:
- Personal storytelling – Sharing experiences that highlight the value of awareness in a non-confrontational way.
- Genuine relationships – Engaging in dialogue that fosters trust before addressing ideological divides.
- Emotional appeal – Using empathy rather than logic to reconnect people with their own humanity.
Conclusion: Awareness Is Not the Disease—Brainwashing Is
The campaign against “wokeness” is not a spontaneous cultural shift; it is an engineered psychological operation rooted in false science, social manipulation, and linguistic conditioning. Musk, Saad, and others have weaponized cognitive biases to create a reality in which awareness is framed as an affliction, leaving millions of people unknowingly programmed to reject their own capacity for critical thought.
But the truth remains: woke still means awake.
And the only way to break the cycle of brainwashing is to remind people—gently, persistently, and compassionately—of their inherent ability to see the world clearly.
