The Urgent Need for Mature Masculine Leadership

In today’s increasingly confusing world, the very definition of masculinity seems up in the air. Many people, both men and women, are deeply questioning what the true nature of masculinity is, what exactly Mature Masculine Leadership looks like, and how one cultivates this. This questioning reflects a pressing need for a new kind of leadership from men. One that is far more holistic, psychologically savvy, and spiritually grounded than the unhelpful extremes of hyper-masculinity and feminized masculinity.

Our understanding of Mature Masculinity has been confused by a myriad of conflicting messages from society, culture, and personal experiences. This confusion has left many male leaders struggling to find an authentic version of leadership that transcends outdated norms, is far more effective, and yet is refreshingly masculine.

Further confusing the picture, the journey to Mature Masculine Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. It is a unique, deeply personal process for each male leader. One that requires new levels of introspection, self-awareness, introspection, mindset shifts, skills upgrades, and the courage to challenge status quo misconceptions of mature masculinity.

It’s time to unlock a new era of masculinity that breaks free from the chains of confusion and redefines what it means to be a truly empowered, compassionate, and purpose-driven male leader.

Are you ready to discover and step into a transcendent version of Mature Masculine Leadership? If so, read on because you might well have just found it!

What is Mature Masculinity and What’s Its Connection With Human Potential and  Transcendence?

Understanding what mature masculinity is starts with a clear picture of the developmental stages of manhood. Those stages can be simply yet clearly represented through a metaphor that might remind you of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. I am grateful to Alison Armstrong for first making me aware of this.

Traditionally, the road toward manhood begins in adolescence. A teenage boy starts his journey as a page to a knight — an apprentice to a young man from whom he learns how to step into early manhood.

The page then becomes a knight. In his twenties, the young man sets out on conquests to prove his worth, seemingly to others but mainly to himself. He tends to be brash and cocky, and views himself as invincible in the adventures he pursues.

Sooner or later, one or both of two things happen. He might crash into the limits of his invincibility when he encounters a situation in his personal or work life that is far beyond his ability to dominate. Or he might grow bored with free-wheeling adventures and conquests. Either way, this initiates his next developmental stage: becoming a metaphorical prince.

Developmentally, a prince buckles down and starts building a metaphorical kingdom. That might be a marriage, fatherhood, an upwardly mobile career, or any combination thereof. If he remains disciplined, persistent, and continue to grow, he eventually gets to be the king of his metaphorical kingdom. In other words, he gets to reap the fruits of his strategic, focused, consistent efforts.

If a man skips the knight phase, ends this phase before growing bored with his conquest adventures, or fails to build a kingdom that he gets to occupy, he almost assuredly will end up in a classic midlife crisis in which he tries to make up for lost time or roads not travelled and then rebuild his kingdom in a more fulfilling way.

If the man milks his knight phase for all it’s worth and then sees his prince phase all the way to success, he will end up in a midlife re-evaluation. Were his sacrifices worth his success? Has his success brought him all he had hoped it would? Is there more to life than what he built?

Either way, the midlife man who successfully moves through his dark night of the soul sooner or later enjoys the satisfaction of occupying his kingdom. Yet, this joy is tempered by a growing yet vague sense that there’s a phase beyond being a metaphorical king.

Eventually, he comes to recognize that his next phase is to become a sage: a wise one who nurtures the next generation of princes and kings on their journey. And even sages are wizened by apprenticing to elder sages.

So there you have it: page to knight to prince to king to sage. That is one useful way of viewing the unfolding of human potential in a man and of understanding mature manhood. Yet, I must put these questions to you:

  1. How many men are wisely nourished and guided into sagehood?
  2. How many men actually mature into wise kings and wizened sages?
  3. How many men are deeply adept at nourishing and guiding those men throughout their journey?
  4. How many male leaders grasp the importance of taking this journey, understand the mindsets and skills they must develop to succeed, and do this with a wise male leader sage at their side?
  5. How many men deeply incorporate the wisdom of psychological savvy and spiritual transcendence into their journey?
  6. What is psychological savvy and spiritual transcendence anyway, what does this have to do with mature masculine leadership, and how does a man develop all this?

Transcendence is unlocking untapped potential.

  1. It is rising above, exceeding, and going beyond the ordinary everyday world.
  2. It’s a leap beyond mere transformation to a more advanced level of personal and professional evolution that can only happen by becoming an ongoing conduit of higher love, wisdom, and power.
  3. It requires a shift in focus from individual achievement to a broader more holistic concern for the greater good and a significantly deeper level of masculine maturity than most male leaders and their mentors currently have.

Society is aching for these men. Women leaders are aching for these men. Younger male leaders are aching for these men. Yet, these aches will not be soothed until a far more comprehensive, unconventional approach to masculine development and leadership is available. One that is psychologically wise, spiritually transcendent, deeply constructive, profoundly loving, and fully responsive to the challenges of today’s world.

The Power Problem With Male Leaders

The core of the problem with us male leaders is our relationship with power: how we understand it and how we wield it. In fact, I would go so far as to say that resetting our relationship with power is the biggest challenge today’s male leaders face.

In a nutshell, power is simply the capacity to have impact. The impact of our consciousness, our motivations, our words (or silence) and our actions (or inaction).

Power is unavoidable. We can’t not have impact. All we can be is awake or asleep about the impact we have. All we can do is take responsibility for our intended and unintended impacts or refuse responsibility for this. Right relationship with power is right relationship with impact. In other words, all we can do is have impact consciously or unconsciously; by design or by default.

Part of the problem with the word “power” is that most men have a poisoned relationship with the word. If we mimic “power poison” that was modeled to us, we become coercive tyrants. If we are afraid of power because the main variety we’ve seen in leaders is power poison and we know we don’t want to do that, we diminish our power and end up as power-phobic wimps.

There is a very understandable reason why we men develop distorted notions about power: the extent to which harmful dysfunctional power is modeled is staggering. Here are three of the most common Faulty Power Postures:

  1. Power Hungry Manipulation: Men who are control addicts, tyrants, and egotistical self-appointed saviors. These include abusers of power who have use negative means that have negative impact, and those who have some amount of positive impact that comes at the cost of significant collateral damage.
  2. Power Rebellious Antagonism: Men who push back against Power Hungry Manipulators opposing them (instead of containing them if and as needed while pushing forward with something better).
  3. Power Phobic Enabling: Men who abdicate power because they don’t want to be Power Hungry Manipulators or Power Rebellious Antagonists. Some abdicate power because they are imprisoned in a  learned helplessness. Others do this by trying to be new age sensitive guys. Yet others do this by hiding behind appearing to be spiritual when what they’re actually doing is finding a way to tolerate the unacceptable. Regardless of the form a man’s power phobia takes, it results in enabling harmful exercises of power to continue.

The truth is that power’s impact can elevate spirit, love, wellbeing, individual freedom, collaboration, and the common good… or it can undermine any or all of these. It can boost our leadership effectiveness or diminish it. It can draw people to us or repulse people from us. One of the biggest challenges of our time is for us as men to wake up to and take responsibility for the impacts we can’t not have, whether we intend these or not.

What does Masculine Power Maturity that look like? In a nutshell, it’s embodying healthy masculine power by using positive means to generate positive impact while preventing unintened negative impact (collateral damage) to the greatest extent possible.

I believe that co-creating an elevated future as a society, a country, a planet, and in your family and business, calls on us as men to fundamentally reset our relationship with power. The starting place for this reset is elevating how we express all five Core Forms of Mature Masculine Power:

  1. Beingness Power: How we presence ourselves, how we embody love.
  2. Doingness Power: How we take action.
  3. Stability Power: How we preserve predictability, organization, and standards.
  4. Change Power: How we facilitate the magic of innovation and transformation.
  5. Choicemaking Power: How we utilize and coordinate beingness, doingness, stability, and change on behalf of mission in service to Source (substitute this with your word for higher love, wisdom, and power — it might be Spirit, God, Higher Self, the wisdom of the universe, and so forth)

I would go so far as to say that resetting our relationship with these five fundamental forms of power is the holy grail for massively boosting mature masculinity and mature masculine leadership. With that power reset as our foundation, we become far more capable of the other cores of healthy masculine leadership:

  1. Male Leader Personal Wellbeing: Not allowing our passion about our purpose, or our strong stamina, to justify self-neglect, over-work, and over-functioning. This only leads to justifying being self-indulgent as a reward for wellbeing neglect.
  2. Male Leader Love Literacy: Not knowing how to participate in and facilitate productive synergistic collaboration, especially around challenging problems or divisive issues.

Once we have reset our relationship with power, wellbeing, and love, we can uplevel our relationship with the 7 Key Habits of Healthy Masculine Leadership:

  1. Purpose Power: Vision/Mission in service of love and highest good. Higher Purpose is the wellspring of masculine leadership power.
  2. Paradigm Power: Sculpting your worldview and selfview instead of being a prisoner to your Inner Critic. Placing your paradigm in service to your highest purpose enables you to wield power wisely and lovingly.
  3. Life Energy Power: Ensuring that you keep your cup full. This requires taking charge of your wellbeing, goals, time, and leverage choices. Doing this requires freedom from limiting beliefs, unresolved trauma, and other baggage. The more life energy you have, the greater your access to mature masculine power.
  4. Multi-Dimensional Perspectives Power: Being a multi-dimensional thinker means being able to view situations from many different points of view. This requires deep teachability and teachability requires discernment (also known as critical thinking): neither swallowing input indiscriminately nor being impervious to influence. As a mature leader we synergize wisdom embedded in multiple perspectives, especially ones that challenge our own. This requires Tensions Competence: the ability to creatively consider polarities (either/or thinking) and seeming contradictions in wisdom-producing ways. Spotting and utilizing the grains, nuggets or boulders of wisdom in multiple perspectives is our insurance policy as men against ideological blindness. Mining that wisdom and synergizing it with our own is a key to generating solutions that have high positive impact with no accompanying unintended negative impact. Multi-dimensional thinking prevents misusing masculine power.
  5. Decisions Power: Knowing when to be the decider and when to seek consensus. A key to this is being able to accurately predict unintended consequences of potential decisions. It requires high levels of Boundaries Intelligence: being able to recognize and honor your limits in ways that enable you to love and collaborate with others without resentment and with integrity. Conveying your decisions in ways that promote support requires sophisticated communication skills. The quality of your decisions, and the way you arrive at them, is a reflection of mature masculinity.
  6. Collaboration Power: Most of us men are trained in coercion and compromise but few of us are trained in the mechanics of effective collaboration (even when we believe in the value of collaboration!). Collaboration power is our ability as a leader to facilitate groups in synergizing diverse intentions and often polarized perspectives so integrative root cause solutions emerge. When doing selling, this means educating so someone can make wise decisions (informed consent), not manipulating them into consenting. Being effective at facilitating collaborative problem-solving and teamwork helps the people you lead trust you to use power wisely.
  7. Growth-Oriented Accountability Power: Most of us men have been taught to confuse coercion, shaming, and other forms of punishment, with authentic accountability. These accountability distortions cause people we lead to resent us, disengage from productivity, resent, seek revenge, or leave. Very few people understand that growth-oriented accountability is taking responsibility for the impacts that the choices we make have on those to whom we’ve made commitments. Mature accountability helps people grow while elevating excellence. It requires setting standards, upleveling procedures, and ensuring alignment between intentions & actions. There are five interconnected and eminently practical growth-oriented procedures and most male leaders have never been exposed to them, let alone helped to master facilitating and teaching them. Growth-oriented accountability makes power productive and nourishing.

In summary:

  1. The big key to mature masculine leadership is resetting our relationship with power.
  2. Doing this requires letting go of popular distortions about power, upleveling how we embody and express our 5 core powers, using those to ensure our own wellbeing and our capacity to love well, and mastering the 7 Key Habits of Healthy Masculine Leadership.
  3. All of these dimensions are missing from most masculine leadership training and mentoring resources.
  4. Power and impact, together with self-responsibility, collaboration, accountability, and integrity, create male leadership magic. Power and impact without self-responsibility, collaboration, accountability, and integrity, create male leadership damage.

All of this, and much more, await you in the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource.

What is the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource?

At this point, you might be thinking something like this:, “Wow, this really hits home. It’s as if Dr. Gruder has somehow gotten into my head and has expressed the very challenges I’ve been struggling with in my leadership role. It’s true that other leader development resources don’t adequately address all of these. Even though the idea of resetting my relationship with power is both exciting and intimidating, I’m inspired by the prospect of becoming a more mature, balanced leader who embodies healthy masculine power and positively influences others. I wonder whether the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource could be a game-changer that integrates my personal growth as a man with my professional success as a male leader. I want to know more.”

Well, in that case, here’s the “more” you want about what the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource is about. In short, it’s the resource that I and other men I’ve assisted needed in order to elevate mature masculinity and get right with using power as a male leader. This resource focuses on upgrading your psychological savvy and spiritual transcendence in order to actualize your highest purpose as a man and a male leader.

Let’s start by defining psychological savvy and spiritual transcendence in the context of masculine maturity and male leadership:

  1. Psychological Savvy: Your capacity to deeply understand your intentions, beliefs, and emotions, the words and behaviors these lead to, and their impacts on others. It includes heighetened self-awareness, empathetic awareness of others, and a capacity to effectively navigate interpersonal dynamics. A psychologically savvy leader is adept at managing their emotions, assessing their impact, communicating authentically, and nourishing healthy relationships.
  2. Spiritual Transcendence: Your heightened capacity to consistently be a conduit of higher love, wisdom and power. It’s about being devoted to levels of meaning that are beyond our egoic self-interest and actualizing our highest purpose in alignment with our highest values. It requires developing a heightened growth mindset that stretches beyond worldly considerations and psychological insights, along with uncommon levels of vulnerability.

Integrating psychological savvy and spiritual transcendence into leadership enables us as men to develop a more profound connection with our team, make more conscious and compassionate decisions, and facilitate growth and positive results in our spheres of influence.

Here’s a bit more context. One of the famous fathers of the human potential movement, Abraham Maslow, developed a hierarchy of self-development needs. Most people who are familiar with this hierarchy believe that its highest level is what Maslow called Self-Actualization. However, toward the end of his life, Maslow realized that there is a level above that one. He called it Self-Transcendence. It’s incumbent on us as male leaders to stretch beyond self-actualization into self-transcendence.

Doing this is not only valuable for our own development as men. It’s crucial in today’s and tomorrow’s marketplace. Consumer demand has changed dramatically since the 1950s. At that time, a consumerism culture was installed that fueled the Materialism Economy, which revolved around getting consumers to purchase an endless parade of products and services. In the early 2000s this evolved into the Experience Economy in which consumers demanded great experiences with the products and services they bought. This changed again in the 20-teens, during which consumers started demanding transformational experiences with products and services. This was (and largely still is) the Transformation Economy. Consumer demand is evolving yet further in the 2020s into the Transcendence Economy. Increasing numbers are now seeking higher meaning and purpose through the transformational experiences they now expect from the products and services they buy.

In the Transformation and Transcendence Marketplaces, consumers require leaders and companies to walk the talk, not merely talk the talk. This means that old approaches to leader development have become out of step with consumer demand. In today’s societally divisive and politically polarized world, people are most drawn to male leaders with levels of psychological savvy and spiritual transcendence that used to merely be optional in earlier decades.

The purpose of the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource is to equip you to flourish as a male leader in a society that is increasingly focused on transformation and transcendence. It’s to enhance your self-efficacy, improve your relationships, and yield greater overall life fulfillment.

The Transcendent Male Leadership Resource didn’t emerge from textbooks, but rather from decades of in-the-trenches experience.

While I did feel loved to some extent by my most influential male role models as I grew up, they were also coercive, verbally abusive, impervious to input, and refused to take responsibility for their unintended negative impacts. Because of this, I entered adulthood confused about what mature masculinity looked like but clear that coercion and verbal abusiveness were.

I decided to try being a “new age sensitive guy” instead. Only decades later did it become clear to me that I had actually been trying to be women’s best girlfriend. That had not worked out any better than the version of masculinity I grew up around.

In the early 2000s, as I approached 50 years old, I finally found versions of mature masculinity that appealed to me primarily through Alison Armstrong’s book “Keys to the Kingdom,” Moore and Gillette’s book “King Warrior Magician Lover,” and becoming involved with an international nonprofit called the ManKind Project. (I ultimately became a certified Elder in MKP, which in part means that I mentor MKP’s leaders.)

During those decades, I had received a PhD in clinical and organizational psychology, had become a licensed psychologist, and had found myself at the forefront of the human potential and integrative health movements.

In the early 1990s, while I still maintained a psychotherapy practice in addition to the keynotes, training programs, and business consulting I was providing, I became intrigued by the many men who were coming to me for therapy because I saw that they shared a very similar story: they had accumulated massive wealth and huge power but their health had gone to hell, their spouse had left them, their kids weren’t talking to them, and they were deeply questioning their life purpose and their sense of meaning. All of them told me me virtually the same thing: “I did what I thought I was supposed to do as a man, and I succeeded, but the cost turned out to be massive and I don’t understand this! What am I missing?”

I ended up being a great help to most of those men. But in hindsight, I see that I was teaching best what I most needed to learn. I didn’t realize this until my first marriage crumbled in the early 2000s (which incidentally was what caused me to enter into deep soul searching about healthy masculinity, which I referred to earlier in this story).

I had become a successful entrepreneur, a highly regarded award-winning expert in my field, and a board member of for profits. I had served as the founding president of an international nonprofit that galvanized a movement and that thrives to this day. That was one of many leadership roles I have held throughout the course of my life, starting as a teenager. A leadership award was named in my honor (the “David Gruder Leadership Award”), I received another award in Visionary Leadership, and among the 8 book awards I’ve received, one was in Conscious Business and Leadership.

Yet, until I stepped into mature masculinity during the first and second decades of this century, my own leadership — and my mentoring of other leaders — fell short. Today, seasoned male leaders who themselves have undergone a considerable amount psychological and spiritual self-development, and have received plenty of leadership training, utilize me to catalyze their next steps in elevating themselves as men and as male leaders. All of these referrals had come by word of mouth or through attending one of my keynotes or training programs.

I didn’t think much about this until both men and women started challenging me to convert my wisdom into a more formal framework and resource so more men could benefit from what I provide. This was the impetus for developing “The Transcendent Male Leadership Resource: The Missing Toolbox to Alchemize Mature Masculine Higher Love, Wisdom, and Power.”

I created this program by drawing on my many decades of training and expertise in curriculum design and training methods to capture all that I’ve learned about mature masculinity and elevated male leadership. It includes all of the ingredients I illuminated in the last section:

  1. Phases of a man’s lifelong journey toward mature manhood.
  2. Resetting men’s relationship with power.
  3. Nourishing men’s spiritually elevated expression of their five Core Forms of Mature Masculine Power.
  4. Elevating Male Leader Personal Wellbeing and Love Literacy.
  5. Equipping male leaders to uplevel their 7 Key Habits of Healthy Masculine Leadership.

In an era when traditional notions of masculinity and leadership are rightly being challenged, this framework offers a timely and relevant solution for male leaders seeking a more evolved, psychologically savvy, and spiritually transcendent way to show up as men and to lead wisely. Best of all, it’s fully customizable to each man. That, in a nutshell, is the Unique Value Proposition of the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource. My hope is that this framework comes to be viewed as the thought and market leader in facilitating higher levels of masculine maturity and transcendent male leadership.

I realize this might sound overwhelming, so I invite you to remember the old joke, as coarse as it is: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. In this case, starting with mastering elevated expression of your five Core Forms of Mature Masculine Power. More about this in the next section, which I hope will help you determine whether the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource is for you.

Is the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource For Me?

At this point, I’m guessing you’re thinking something like this: “Although committing to resetting my relationship with power and elevating my masculine maturity is both exciting and daunting, the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource (TMLR) might well be the game-changer I’ve been searching for, so I can integrate my personal growth as a man with my professional success as a leader. Its emphasis on psychological savvy and spiritual transcendence in leadership resonates deeply with me and developing an even higher sense of purpose feels like a breath of fresh air. Knowing that Dr. Gruder has traveled his own rocky journey toward masculine maturity, and has helped countless other men along the way, gives me confidence. But, is this resource actually for me?”

Great question! Allow me to illuminate who the Transcendent Male Leadership Resource (TMLR) is for, how it’s designed, what it will require of you, and what benefits would be realistic for you to anticipate reaping.

Who’s It For? If you resonate with what you’ve read so far, you’re a man who values being introspective, you’re committed to lifelong personal and leadership growth, you’re seeking a comprehensive picture of mature masculine leadership, and you want to uplevel your embodiment of this. The TMLR is for male leaders who are motivated by the promise of unlocking new potential and gaining insights into often-overlooked aspects of leadership, and are highly motivated to take their next steps in that direction. Is that you?

How’s It Designed? Dr. Gruder fully customizes your TMLR journey to your growth edges and objectives. We’ll chunk your journey into bite-sized pieces, each of which will include content to absorb (videos, audios, and/or text), completing worksheets for applying that content in your life, and meeting with me to go even further and deeper with that content. I might also start facilitating monthly group masterminds with men who are in the midst of their journey to alchemize higher love, wisdom, and power. With that in mind, what I can say from experience is that journeys tend to unfold in this sequence (yours might vary)…

  1. Level 1: Master the 5 Core Energies of Mature Masculinity described further above on this page.
  2. Level 2: Build Your Customized Version of the SPARC Blueprint for Transcendent Male Leaders. This Blueprint is a version of my human potential actualization framework that is specifically for men wanting to up their masculine maturity and their effectiveness as a male leader. SPARC is an acronym where:
    • “S” stands for Shatter Spells (the limiting beliefs and other baggage that block you from taking masculine leader effectiveness to the next level)
    • “P” stands for Picture the Future (envision a transcendent version of the world you want to live in and leave for those who follow you)
    • “A” stands for Align Your Purpose and Paradigm (so your purpose articulates your chosen role in helping your desired future emerge and your paradigm best supports you in embodying it)
    • “R” stands for Rise Your Mindsets and Skills (so you’re more capable than ever of actualizing your purpose as a mature male leader), and
    • “C” stands for Collaborate with Others and Initiatives (the ones that are most leveraged to enable you to amplify your positive impact).
  3. Level 3: Implement Your SPARC Blueprint.

I’m considering turning this into 6-month programs where cohorts of men support each other on their hero’s journey toward mature masculinity and transcendent male leadership with my assistance. Do let me know. if that’s of interest to you.

What Will It Require of You? There’s an old saying — “God heals, I help, you work.” What’s required of you is to open more and more consistently to your higher guidance, for you to be teachable with the material we cover together and the skills you’ll be upgrading, and for you to do the work at a speed that’s right for you, with me supporting you in being accountable to the commitments you make. Also know that this is a premium resource. It’s not for the uncommitted or hesitant, and the fees are what you’d expect from any top-level leader development mentor.

What Benefits Can You Get With This? You’ll set the specific benefits you want to get in each phase. I’ll help you identify the benefits you seek in upleveled masculine maturity, personal wellbeing, relationships, and leadership. As a side note I’m also available to…

  • Consult with women leaders who are running into difficulty dealing with male leaders or subordinates
  • Facilitate high-level collaboration between female leaders and male leaders.

Is Dr. Gruder My Best Guide for This Journey?

Obviously only you can answer that question. Right-matching is supremely important. Allow me to offer some guidelines for making this decision:

  1. How much you resonate with what you’ve read thus far?
  2. How appealing is the framework I’ve outlined thus far?
  3. How valuable might my unusual blend of experience be for you, and would utilizing a wise elder be optimal for guiding you through your next steps toward more elevated masculine maturity and male leadership? (I’ve included more about this below.)
  4. How likely is it that we will develop enjoyable and productive working chemistry? (Schedule a time to talk with me so you can gauge this firsthand by clicking the button in the “What’s My Next Step?” section below.)

I have hopefully answered most of question 3 in what you’ve read so far, but since I’ve been chastised many times because underplaying my expertise makes me a too-well-kept secret, I’m going to temporarily set aside my humility programming  to offer you a no-holdbacks bullet-point summary:

  1. I’ve held a wide variety or leadership roles, starting in high school when I became the Vocal Director for musicals I helped to produce.
  2. I’ve been an entrepreneur since 1980, and have taught entrepreneurship since 2010, so I am deeply familiar with the ups and downs of that journey.
  3. I am among the few clinical and organizational psychologists who is trained in masterplanning and has decades of experience in facilitating this. (While I no longer provide psychotherapy, I do bring to all of my clients the vast experience and wisdom I gained from my two decades as a psychotherapist. And, in fact, one of the hats I still wear is training and mentoring psychotherapists.)
  4. I was tapped to be the founding president of an international nonprofit in 1998 that coalesced a movement and that’s going strong to this day.
  5. I’ve sat on boards of for-profits and nonprofits.
  6. I’ve provided leadership training all the way up to a group of WTO Ambassadors.
  7. I have been involved since 2002 with an international nonprofit whose mission is to help men step into mature manhood (the ManKind Project) and, as one of their certified elders, I mentor many of its leaders.
  8. My work has been recognized through an unusually diverse range of personal and book awards, including: Visionary Leadership, Conscious Business and Leadership, Culture Creation, Politics and Society, Social Change, Health and Wellness, Mental Health, Transformational Psychology, Self-Help, and Outstanding Musicianship.
  9. I’ve provided keynotes, training programs, and consulting in eight countries on three continents.
  10. I’ve been featured well over 2 dozen times in Forbes, Inc, Entrepreneur, and Nonprofit Performance and have been interviewed hundreds of times on radio, TV, and internet shows.
  11. I’ve been involved in various capacities with well over 25 books, many of which have been bestsellers and one of which was a Wall Street Journal bestseller.
  12. I host the Reimagining Humanity’s Future and Yours show and co-host the Boosting Business Value podcast and The One Thing podcast.
  13. My clients refer to me as their Swiss Army Knife, Gandalf, Yoda, Savant, and Human Potential Polymath.
  14. When I was 15, my parents sent me to the infamous Woodstock music festival through the summer camp for the performing arts that I attended… but that’s a story for another time!
  15. Although my first love is music, and I was expected to become a professional musician (which I in fact was for a short time), I knew by the time I was 16 that my calling was to become a psychologist.
  16. My Inner Essence is “Grounded Transcendence” and my Animal Totem is “Elk With Phoenix Perched on Antlers.”
  17. I am blessed with being in a delicious and ever-growing marriage to an amazing woman who I first got together with in 2004. I like to say I got it right the second time even though the fuller truth is that in a different way I got it right the first time for who I was back then.
  18. My moment-to-moment spiritual practice is to remain — or return to — unjustifiable joy independent of external experiences. Although I save misery for special occasions, I do face my shadow whenever it pops up rather than run from it.
  19. I burp and fart, am far from perfect (like every other man), and am continually learning and growing.
